OUR SERVICES
Stained Glass Window Design
The classic elements of design are fundamental to every stained glass window. Proper composition, balance, color scheme, contrast, detail, etc. are vital for a successful work. The conceptualization process is where the fun begins. We listen to the clients' ideas and ask directed questions for input. Then we draw up sketches, scale drawings, and provide a quote. We develop the artwork, shepherding the client through glass selection, then proceed through construction with client/artisan checkpoints along the way. (We've been doing it this way for years because it eliminates misunderstandings.) The client approves each step to assure that the only surprises are positive as you watch your project proceed toward finished construction and installation.

Church Restoration
Your stained glass windows are a legacy to be preserved and protected. Their components may need repair, restoration or replacement. Primum non nocere (First do no harm). With proper assessment, handling, and (re-) construction your stained glass artwork will last for many generations.
External Protection
There are various materials used to protect stained glass windows including tempered glass, thermal units, laminated glass, polycarbonate, and acrylic. Every protective enclosure must be properly vented to prevent excessive heat accumulation which adds to premature failure of material components, primarily paint, glazing, window cement, and woodwork.

Homeowners usually have an idea of what they want. Through directed questions about situation in the building, elevation, light source, etc. We begin by developing a working sketch of the linear design and continue working through the design and assembly process all the way through construction and installation.

Founded in 1987, Sunsmith Stained Glassworks is led by its founder, Robert Kane, who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Science in Art Education. With over 45 years of experience, Robert specializes in designing and crafting custom stained glass windows for churches, businesses, and homes, blending artistry and precision to create timeless decorative pieces. His passion for stained glass is inspired by the vibrant interplay of light and color in historic glasswork. Robert has honed his craft through decades of hands-on work, mastering techniques in glass cutting, leading, and soldering, while also incorporating modern innovations to improve durability and design. He is deeply committed to working with clients to bring their unique vision to life, ensuring each piece reflects both artistic excellence and personal significance. Additionally, Robert has extensive experience in the specialized restoration of stained glass windows in historic landmarks, commercial buildings, and churches, helping preserve their cultural, artistic, and architectural heritage for future generations.

When the Stained Glass Windows at our church here in Tawas City, Michigan, required some repair (cracked panels, aged fittings, caulking, weather sealing, etc.) we were in need of an experienced contractor to take on the task.
